Took the weekend to create a composite consisting of 18 panoramas. Exploring the space I inhabit with Esaias, how we move through it, utilize it & interact with it. Examining our space as a place to create, relax and connect.

The aperture or the size of the lens opening, works the same way the iris of your eyes work. Think back to stepping outside into the sun, blinking a couple times from the brightness and squinting. Pretty soon, the reaction to the light has passed and you see the world as if your eyes never experienced this overdose of light. This is because your iris narrowed a bit to adjust to the brighter conditions you stepped into. The widening and narrowing of the aperture are specified with an f-stop.

F-Stops are numbers associated with the size of the diameter of the aperture. We still use the term ‘f-stop’ from the early days in photography, when cameras were manually adjusted through individual metal ‘stop’ plates that had holes of different diameters. F-Stops with small numbers correspond to the wider apertures, this means that the lens will admit more light. F-Stops with higher numbers correspond to a narrower aperture, meaning the lens will admit less light. This is why higher f-stop numbers generally require a longer shutter speed to capture your subject.

Besides balancing a proper exposure, aperture is one of the factors that effect depth of field. Depth of field is essentially the range of sharpness that is in front and behind the subject focused on.

This photograph of some honeycombs I found was taken at f 2.8, since the f-stop was so low, we can see that the range of focus is shallow. The areas in front and behind what the lens focused on to are blurry. Now the same photograph of these honeycombs, were retaken at f 20, with such a narrow aperture opening, we can see that there is more range in the depth of focus.
